Denver Post, May 5th, Jeff Bradley

BIOGRAPHY
The full lyric soprano voice of Carolyn Val-Schmidt inspires acclaim for beauty of tone and bel canto line as well as dramatic thrust and breath-catching flexibility.

Appearances at the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall prededed her 18 major opera roles. A celebrated Mozart soprano, Val-Schmidt's professional opera debut in Sarasota as "Contessa" let to "Fiordiligi," and "Donna Anna," where her fluidity of line, beautiful tone, agility, and tasteful phrasing graced stages such as the Artists Internationale and Michigan Opera Theater.

This versatile soprano has sung in eleven languages and has performed with over a dozen opera companies. Val-Schmidt has sung, acted, and danced in musical theather across the United States.

Val-Schmidt served as a guest soloist with renowned concert series such as the Newport Music Festival and New York's Clarion Concerts. Val-Schmidt's orchestral, recital and cabaret appearances are noted for musical sensitivity and technical finesse as well as stimulating repertoire.

This soprano received a Fellowship in the Perfoming Arts to pursue her Master's degree in music and drama at the University of Illinois. Awards of two Rockerfeller grants and three international voice competitions followed graduation.

Val-Schmidt was invited to join the Maria Callas Master Class and created the leading soprano role in the World Premiere of Virgil Thomson's Lord Byron at the American Opera Center in the Julliard School.

Former Chair of the Voice Department at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Val-Schmidt judged the 1993 Metropolitan Opera Regional Competition. She balances a private voice studio with her performance schedule.
